Methods

We endorse and use several methods of musical instruction here at the Easthampton Music Conservatory.  We believe it is essential to get to know our students’ learning styles before assigning them to a course that suits their personality.  Some of our favorite lesson/theory books include the Michael Aaron course, Alfred’s Method, Joel Rothman, Roy Burns, and Faber’s Adventures.  For technical instruction on chords, scales, cadences and arpeggios, we like to use popular music and composition projects so that students how to use lead sheets while they learn their chords.  We like to find ways to motivate students to move through lesson books as quickly as possible.  Our students are not required to buy books; teachers provide books through a lending library system. This way, a course can be changed if needed without burdening parents with extra, unforeseen expenses.  Many students do best with a more nontraditional approach, so we don’t always rely on lesson books alone.

Once students have mastered basics of their instruments, a process that can take 1 to 3 years, they consult with teachers and their parents to decide the direction the development of their musicianship will go. Rock/Pop/Jazz/Sacred or Gospel oriented students take advantage of our sound system, learn microphone techniques, learn how to improvise from lead sheets, form their own bands, and put together shows.  Classical students will be assisted in studying the great composers, and will put together annual portfolios of perfected, memorized classical pieces from every era.  Skills are honed further through performance opportunities.
